Hi! My name is Travis and I’m a graduate of Stuyvesant High School and NYU’s Gallatin School of Individualized Study with a concentration in political psychology and social justice. I’ve been tutoring with Big Sibs for two years now, specializing in the SHSAT and chess. Because I attended a specialized high school, the SHSAT and I go way back—and I have spent the last two years of tutoring getting to know the test even better!
I am also Big Sibs’ resident chess tutor and have been playing the game since I was 5. Growing up, I went to many tournaments, with my highlight being my middle school team tying for first place at Youth Nationals! I quit competitive chess by high school, but have still been playing casually ever since.
While the SHSAT and chess are my specialties, I teach many other subjects including the SAT, math, science, and Spanish. Going forward I’m excited to continue working with kids to teach them the wonders of the millennia old game known as chess and to help prepare kids for difficult but not impossible standardized tests!
